The Undead in the Dream - November 7, 2025
Dear Reader,
Someone asked me about the undead. Of course, I naturally assumed they were discussing the myriad forms of vampires found in the dream. I was ready to explain all the variants involved — from the level of the dream, the magic wielded, and the hierarchical order, but...
They wanted to know about zombies. I blinked. Then I responded with a short answer. No.
The dream lacks zombies. Well, not exactly. But to explain that requires a bit of lore surrounding conjurers. The conjurers are the grey-skinned, death-wielding witches of the Netherworld who were all originally servants for the castle at Talamh na Marb.
A few decided they desired to live off-grid and have more freedom, so they struck a deal for sanctuary with Lord Orobas, the demon horse lord, and moved to the grasslands of Talamh Marcra on the border with the Dorcha.
What was the deal that would have a demon defy Death, you ask? They would teach Orobas how to breed the midnight mares for midnight riders. How could a demon horse lord say no to the idea of raising his own army of demonic, blood-drinking warhorses?
Death has honor. If the conjurers wanted freedom, he allowed it so long as Orobas guaranteed their safety. Which he did.
Conjurers reanimated dogs to help with herding the horses. So, there are zombie ranch dogs in the Netherworld.
Also, a wizard once stole the conjurer's death magic and wrought havoc in the Leaindeail by raising an army of the dead. Fury surrendered his life to a shaman to become a dragon and destroyed the revenant hoard when the wizard lost control and the zombies destroyed his village.
All of that's a convoluted answer to a straightforward question, and none of this lore exists in the currently published Draoithe Saga titles. Which is why I sighed, said no, and kept dreaming about publishing more of the dream.
The truth is the dream is filled with eternal characters, immortal characters, and a veritable host of undead creatures. The problem is I can't write, edit and publish fast enough to point to a title and provide an example. Just know, more is coming.
And now, it's time for a word from our sponsor, Ophelia Kee.
