Audiobooks in the Dream - April 11, 2025
Dear Reader,
I recently received an invitation from Amazon to add my stories as digitally narrated tales on their retail platform. I took up the challenge, chose a digital voice and uploaded every story currently published in the dream. This took a while, and as I write this missive, I'm still updating the universal book links as the stories exit Amazon's review process. If Amazon is your preferred platform, the dream will soon be available in the audio format.
I won't lie and pretend the quality of Amazon's digital audio equals Google Play's digital voice over because it absolutely does not. It has more options than Apple, but is still inferior in quality even to Apple.
In my opinion, Google makes the best digital audio files for authors. They paid the artists, rather than steal their voices. The files are also transferrable for sale in other places.
It's an unbelievably grand combination for an indie author. As longs as I publish the work with Google, I can receive the files for free. It allows me to sell the audiobooks at a price commiserate with the ebook. I receive fewer royalties than with the ebook, but it makes the dream more accessible to readers.
I've had people ask me to read my stories myself, but my voice won't hold out. I don't sound all that great with my mangled southern accent either. It would be a dismal experience. Also, I'm not a good narrator. (I make too many mistakes.)
But... I heard some voice clone work from Eleven Labs recently, and the quality blew me away. Findaway Voices now accepts these files. If the audiobooks and stories in the dream earn enough, I may attempt to create some Eleven Labs versions, but I probably won't use my voice clone.
For now, Google reigns supreme for reading the dream. If you purchase an audiobook from OpheliaKee.com or the retailers (Amazon and Apple excluded), or listen to any of the tales in the miniseries, story cast, or subscriptions, you hear the finest digital quality audiobook crafted by Google which I can deliver.

Behind the Scenes
I have been busy publishing Smoldering Frost this week, and by the time anyone reads this, I'm hopeful the book will be available everywhere. I tried creating preorders about a year ago, but it takes too much effort to publish a book in multiple formats on several retailers.
Authors lack control over how and when a retailer accepts a book. If there's a problem and the book fails the review process, the issue needing to be resolved along with the demands of a day job in the way means this may not be an easy or speedy task.
Rather than failing to meet a preorder deadline and potentially frustrating my readers, I'd rather share target dates and publish the book in stages before that deadline. The book still may not be available everywhere on the target date, but it should be in most places. This way, if a reader finds the book early, they may have a pleasant surprise. The alternative of being sadly disappointed when they didn't receive a story they had patiently awaited is unacceptable to me.
In Other Draoithe Saga News
