A Dark Oath - December 13, 2024

Dear Reader,

I know what you're thinking. What is up with all the dark urban fantasy around the holidays? Why aren't you posting something lighthearted? The simple answer: I can't work that way. Unlike authors who write the stories they want to tell, I write the stories the muse wants told. Maybe that makes this old tiger a strange storyteller, but denying the facts serve no purpose.

I've occasionally challenged myself to write things outside of the dream, only to realize later they were actually part of the dream in a place I hadn't visited. I've even begun writing in another series, but it fizzled out. It wasn't what the muse wanted.

I will finish writing the Draoithe Saga someday. I have faith, but writing outside of the dream until it happens isn't easy. It also never lends itself to the pure high I get from completing a scene within the dream. I return to the dream repeatedly because it's where the passion to write and create the story lives.

Perhaps the dream is where I hone the craft of storytelling. Perhaps it's what the educated call my magnus opus. None of that makes any difference. The dream is everything until I know it's a complete body of work.

Now that you've seen enough ad cards for a while, let's get back to the post.

I've moved on to the next story, even if I'm not writing anything brand new. Dark Oath continues Flame and Nightshade's love story. But first, a little of the backstory for posting extra episodes in a miniseries and writing them. Or rather writing parts of a book which aren't the story. It's practically the same thing, right?

Behind the Scenes

Considering that I'm not working on new story content at the moment, Dark Oath and its extras and edits hold my current attention. I'm working on edits one chapter at a time, and I'm posting chapters to the Valkyrie Riders Miniseries. Of course, the character introductions have occurred because this tale is the second part of the Flame and Nightshade trilogy of tales.

It was the story description I struggled with writing. I'm terrible at them. Half the time I get too long-winded. I've even considered rewriting some of the earlier ones. But I honestly think I have finally found a system which works for me.

You would think I would have perfected it a long time ago. I've published over 30 titles, but persuasive writing was never my forte. And writing sales copy for a story with 30,000+ words after writing and editing that tome, well let's just say it's as difficult as learning how to run social media ad campaigns which offer a positive return on the initial investment. I still can't do that, either.
